Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian desk book slide dates from circa 1875 in the gentleman's library style, designed as an expanding desktop accessory for holding or displaying books. The piece consists of dark brown coromandel wood with a polished dark finish, fitted with hinged, arched ends adorned with pietra dura floral stone inlays. These decorative stone panels are framed by elaborate engraved brass mounts secured with visible metal pins. The central wooden platform incorporates two fixed upright dividers and a small rectangular brass maker plaque inset into the middle section. The whole structure rests upon a stepped plinth base running the full length of the housing. Measuring 20 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 19 cm deep, the extending slide accommodates varying shelf lengths. In a modern home, this item sits appropriately upon an office desk or library table to organise books, small folios, or decorative ornaments.

FAQs

A Victorian pietra dura book slide is an adjustable desktop accessory produced during the late nineteenth century to hold books upright. It features folding or sliding end panels adorned with pietra dura, an Italian stone-inlay technique depicting floral or geometric designs.

These items were typically constructed using dense hardwoods or exotic veneers, such as coromandel, ebony, or rosewood. Decorative elements were integrated using cast or engraved brass fittings alongside natural stone or marble mosaics for the inlaid panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction features, including hand-cut fittings, stamped brass mechanisms, and natural oxidisation on metal surfaces. The pietra dura panels display hand-fitted hardstone pieces flush-set into slate or marble substrates.

Place the book slide upon an executive desk, sideboard, or console table to organise reference books or decorative volumes. Its dark wood tones and metallic accents complement both contemporary study spaces and classic library environments.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners on the stone inlay and timber. Brass mounts should be left unpolished to preserve the original patina, while timber sections benefit from occasional applications of natural beeswax.
