FAQs

Papier-mache experienced a major revival during the 19th century, particularly in France and England, where moulded paper pulp was treated with oil and resin to create durable, lightweight blanks for decorative objects like trays and boxes.

These items were typically constructed from layers of paper pulp or paper sheets combined with glue, chalk, and resin, pressed into moulds, cured, and then finished with multiple coats of japan or lacquer before hand-painting.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic craquelure, natural wear to the underlying paper or composition material, hand-applied brushwork rather than modern printing, and appropriate weight and structural rigidity.

Antique trays can be used functionally as serving accessories or displayed flat on coffee tables, consoles, or mounted securely on walls to add texture, colour, and historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping items away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity levels, avoiding moisture or harsh chemical cleaners, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
