A superb example of traditional Japanese design, this kaidan tansu—or step chest in excellent antique condition. A single-sided step chest conveniently separates into two sections for ease of movement throughout the home. Crafted from richly patinated hardwood, its design features a tiered arrangement of compartments, each adorned with ornate iron handles and decorative escutcheons. Designed for wall placement, it features sliding doors, hinged compartments, and drawers, all fitted with original iron hardware. Originally conceived to serve as both storage and staircase in Meiji-era merchant houses, this piece embodies the ingenuity and elegance of Japanese craftsmanship.
