A distinguished example of East-West craftsmanship, this Ottoman flintlock pistol is mounted with a French lock signed by Dumarest, one of the renowned St. Étienne gunmaking family of the late 18th century. The imported French lock, prized for its quality, is housed in a traditional Ottoman stock of characteristic form, complete with brass mounts, decorative butt cap and the typical faux ramrod.
The lockplate is crisply signed Dumarest and retains its original patina. The Ottoman stock shows honest age, with fittings of mellowed brass and a pleasing surface untouched by modern restoration.
Such hybrid arms were highly prized in the Ottoman Empire, combining the reliability of French gunmaking with the distinctive aesthetics of Eastern stocks. Today, they illustrate the vibrant exchange of technology and style between Europe and the Near East at the turn of the 19th century.
Overall length: 36 cm.
Condition: Lock signed and of good age, mechanism functioning. stock and mount
...s with expected wear for period.
A rare and desirable collector’s piece, attractive both for its Dumarest signature and for its evocative Ottoman form.
