Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Quarter-veneered burr walnut top: standard practice for mid-Victorian fine cabinet work.
Hand-carved acanthus and scroll work: crisp detailing with natural darkening in hollows.
Serpentine crossbanded frieze: complex shaping typical of mid-19th-century salon furniture.
Subtle veneer movement across joints: natural timber shrinkage over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian centre table dates from 1860 in the English Country House style. The freestanding piece uses burr walnut, walnut, and boxwood inlay in a warm brown colour, showing natural wood grain and patination across the surfaces. Details include an oval serpentine top with a moulded edge, a shaped frieze, four carved solid walnut cabriole legs ending in scroll feet, and a shaped carved walnut stretcher connecting the base. The proportions measure 73.5 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 75.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item suits a foyer center as a display surface or a small table in a principal room. The design allows it to stand away from walls, providing a stable platform for lamps, books, or decorative objects while adding traditional character to an entrance hall or living space.

FAQs

These tables are constructed using burr walnut veneers over solid timber cores, often featuring decorative marquetry inlays made from boxwood, supported by solid carved walnut legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved undersides, natural age-related oxidisation in the timber, original brass castors, and hand-cut veneer thickness on the decorative tabletop.

Position the piece in a central foyer or spacious living area as a vocal anchor, pairing it with contemporary ceramics or books to contrast traditional woodwork with modern elements.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply clear beeswax polish twice yearly to protect the natural finish.

A Victorian burr walnut centre table is a freestanding 19th-century English table designed to be viewed from all angles, featuring highly patterned veneers cut from walnut tree burls.
