Constructed from walnut, the circular table top with a central marquetry floral bouquet and radiating cartouches of historical figures in medieval dress, all on an ebony ground, with an undulating frieze below the moulded edge, the triform base with scrolled legs, carved in relief with faces and flowers, standing on porcelain castors.
English, circa 1860
While the source of the marquetry figures is unknown, they all appear to be related to literature, scholarship and heraldry, some dressed in costly ermine, others wearing crowns and bearing armour, while holding letters, gesturing to scrolls or facing a lectern. These themes echo the intended place of this table within a study, library, or office.
