FAQs

During the Victorian era, taxidermy under glass domes became immensely popular as a reflection of societys fascination with natural history, science, and exploration. These displays served as decorative centrepieces in middle-class homes, functioning both as scientific specimens and artistic arrangements.

Authentic Victorian domes were typically made from hand-blown cylinder glass, which often exhibits minor bubbles and imperfections, seated upon a turned wooden base made from ebonised wood, mahogany, or rosewood. The interior landscapes frequently incorporated dried botanical elements, moss, twigs, and plaster work.

Authentic pieces generally feature mouth-blown glass with distinct thickness variations, waviness, and tiny air bubbles. The wooden bases usually show traditional joinery and period-appropriate patination, whereas modern reproductions often utilise machine-made, perfectly uniform glass and contemporary fixings.

This item integrates well into eclectic, maximalist, or study spaces, where it can be displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or sideboards. Pairing the natural history specimen with dark woods, leather books, and brass accessories enhances its historic charm.

Preservation requires keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent feather fading and degradation. The glass exterior can be cleaned with standard glass cleaner, but the delicate interior should remain sealed to protect the specimen from dust, humidity, and pests.
