Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the dining hall, known as the refectory. These long, narrow tables were designed to seat large numbers of people and evolved over centuries into staple pieces of domestic dining furniture.

Authentic refectory tables are predominantly constructed from solid English oak, joined using traditional methods such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. They typically feature heavy trestle bases connected by a central stretcher for structural stability.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved details, timber shrinkage, and tool marks consistent with historical woodworking practices. Examination of the underside, joints, and fixings often reveals hand-cut peg construction rather than modern machine-made screws.

Pairing a heavy wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating creates a balanced contrast between old and new elements. Keeping the tabletop uncluttered with simple linen runners or understated ceramics highlights the natural wood grain and carved details.

Maintain antique oak by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the timber. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting.
