Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the Middle Ages, refectory tables were long, narrow wooden tables used for communal dining in monasteries and castles. The design evolved through the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras into a standard format for large domestic dining spaces, characterised by sturdy plank tops and low support stretchers.

Traditional refectory tables are crafted from solid hard woods, most commonly oak. Construction typically includes thick top planks, stout turned or trestle legs, and mortise-and-tenon joints secured with wood pegs, reinforced by a low H-shaped or linear stretcher base.

Revival pieces from the 1920s and 1930s often feature uniform saw marks beneath the table top, machine-assisted woodturning on the legs, and natural surface wear consistent with age along the stretcher rails and table edges.

A large oak refectory table works well as a grounding element in an open-plan kitchen or formal dining area. It can be paired with contemporary upholstered chairs or mismatched vintage wooden seating to balance traditional proportions with modern textures.

Keep the wood surface clean using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Avoid placement near direct heat sources or radiators to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
