Oak cradles date back to the medieval period, becoming increasingly refined during the 17th century with architectural hoods designed to protect infants from drafts.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints, and mounted on curved wooden rockers.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-adzed tool marks, iron or treen peg fixings, shrinkage splits, and a deep patination acquired over centuries of use.

An antique cradle can be utilised as a sculptural floor-standing display piece for textiles, blankets, or dried botanicals within a living space or bedroom.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying occasional applications of natural beeswax, and avoiding synthetic polishes.
