This late seventeenth-century William and Mary side table is constructed from oak and walnut with a dark brown finish. The rectangular top displays geometric parquetry inlay, bordered by mitred wooden framing. Below the top sits a single frieze drawer fitted with a round metal drop handle and a shaped backplate. The table is supported by barley twist legs joined by a matching spiral-turned stretcher and finished with bun feet. Surface grain variations and minor natural timber markings show the authentic age of the piece. The side table measures 72 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. Its compact proportions make it suitable for placement at the end of a sofa in a living room, or as a display table in a hallway or study within an English country house interior.

Late 17th-century furniture from the Carolean and William and Mary eras is recognised for geometric wood veneers, bold barley twist turnings, and sturdy stretchers. Side tables from this period often served multi-functional roles in reception rooms and hallways.

Craftsmen typically utilised native hardwoods such as oak and walnut, incorporating fruitwoods or contrasting timbers to form geometric parquetry patterns. Hand-forged iron or brass drop handles were commonly fitted to the single frieze drawers.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn wood veneers of variable thickness, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and subtle irregularities in the spiral turnings on the legs. Natural timber shrinkage, wooden peg construction, and uneven surface wear also indicate genuine period construction.

Position the table as an accent piece beside contemporary seating or in an entryway paired with a plain wall mirror. The rich timber tones and geometric top contrast effectively against neutral backdrops and modern textiles.

Maintain a stable humidity level to prevent wood movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically, avoiding liquid cleaners or modern aerosol sprays.
