Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Refectory tables originated during the Middle Ages for communal dining in monastic refectories. Over time, the sturdy trestle design was adapted into secular grand homes during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, remaining a cornerstone of traditional timber furniture design.

Traditional refectory tables are crafted from solid hardwoods, primarily oak, walnut, or pine. Construction typically features heavy turned or carved pedestal supports, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, pegged timber fastenings, and a central stretcher base for structural stability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved motifs such as acanthus leaves or gadrooning on bulbous leg supports, irregular hand-planed top surfaces, wooden peg joinery, and natural wear patterns concentrated along the foot stretchers and base.

Pairing a substantial timber refectory table with contemporary mid-century or minimalist dining chairs creates a balanced contrast of textures. Clean modern lighting above the tabletop highlights the timber grain while preventing the room from feeling visually heavy.

Regular dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and periodic application of high-quality beeswax preserve the wood finish. Spills should be wiped up immediately, and the timber should be kept away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent warping.
