FAQs

Chinese Export furniture refers to pieces manufactured in China specifically for Western markets from the 17th to the 19th centuries, often featuring European forms decorated with traditional Chinese motifs.

Authentic pieces typically utilise a wooden core coated with multiple layers of natural tree sap lacquer, which is then cured, polished, and hand-gilded with gold leaf or metallic pigments.

Authenticity is determined by examining the depth of the lacquer layers, natural age-related crazing or craquelure, hand-painted details, and traditional joinery methods appropriate to the period.

This piece works effectively as an accent table in a living room or study, where its dark finish and intricate metallic details provide a focal point that contrasts with modern minimalist furnishings.

Lacquer should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent warping or cracking, and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth without chemical polishes.
