Description

A pair of Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain ‘Beaker Ornaments' with pierced lids c.1800. Each Beaker very finely painted in the manner of John Wood with classical scenes after Angelica Kauffman including ‘Venus attired by the Graces’ and ‘Cupid & Cephisa’. Each tumbler marked Chamberlain Worcester to the base and only one with the name of the scene. 

For a similar pair of Ornaments in the V & A, see page 280 plate 361 of Geoffrey Godden’s book on Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain.  Also see page 370 of John Sandon's Dictionary of Worcester porcelain for a similar garniture. 

Condition: Minor hairline crack to one beaker restored and some re-touching to the gilt on the tumblers. Stoppers to the pierced lids now lacking.

FAQs

Chamberlain Worcester was a prominent English pottery and porcelain manufacturer established in Worcester in 1789 by Robert Chamberlain. Pieces from the Regency period around 1800 are noted for high-quality body paste, intricate gilding, and finely detailed hand-painted classical scenes.

These items are crafted from fine soft-paste or bone china porcelain, finished with hand-applied polychrome enamel painting and heavy burnished gilding on raised grounds. Firing took place in multi-chamber kilns typical of early 19th-century English factories.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the paste quality, the characteristic vibrancy of the enamel colours, the weight and finish of the fire-gilt, and factory marks which may include painted or impressed script signatures or pattern numbers.

These decorative objects work well as focal points on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or atop a sideboard where their detailed neoclassical motifs can be appreciated at close range.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned exclusively by dusting with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid immersion in water, harsh chemical cleaners, or ultrasonic baths, particularly on pieces featuring delicate cold-painted details or gold leaf.
