FAQs

Enamel advertising signs, also known as porcelain enamel signs, gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were widely used by companies to promote products on storefronts and railway stations because the fused glass-on-metal finish provided exceptional durability and vibrant colour retention in outdoor environments.

These signs were produced by applying powdered glass to a heavy sheet metal base, typically iron or steel. The piece was then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, melting the glass into a smooth, glossy, and weather-resistant coating known as vitreous enamel.

Authentic pieces typically feature multiple layers of fired enamel, distinct weight, and genuine signs of age such as rust along the mounting holes, chipping where the brittle glass has impacted, and slight surface crazing. Modern reproductions often feel smooth over damaged areas, use modern typography, or lack the characteristic gloss and depth of historic vitreous enamel.

Such pieces serve as strong focal points in industrial, eclectic, or loft-style interiors. Mounting the sign directly onto a neutral wall allows the bold typography and aged patina to stand out without competing with surrounding decor.

Preservation involves gently cleaning the surface with a soft cloth and mild soap to remove dust and grime, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage the remaining enamel. To prevent further flaking or rust progression around damaged edges, items should be kept in stable indoor humidity levels.
