Description

One of the best examples of these very desirable early nutcrackers I have bought in a long time...it dates from the late 18thc / early 19thc and is made from finest fruitwood and is in the shape of the cobb / hazel nut, that it is used for cracking....these collectable nutcrackers would have been carried in your pocket in readiness to be used when you were lucky enough to come across hedgerow or woodland bushes full of the hazel / cobb nut...and as you can see the handle is pitted with teeth marks from former owners using their teeth to gain extra pressure to crack the nut....it is decorated with concentric ring pattern , has a very good colour and is in excellent condition.

English. C1780-C1800.

Treen refers to small, functional wooden household objects made by hand or on a lathe, popular from the 16th century through the Victorian era before mass manufacturing took over.

Craftspeople typically used dense, hard domestic timbers such as fruitwoods, boxwood, sycamore, and beech, which could withstand the pressures of daily use and take a fine turned finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut wooden threads on the screw mechanism, tool marks consistent with manual lathe turning, and a deep, natural patina developed over centuries of handling.

These tactile objects bring warmth and historical texture to contemporary spaces when displayed simply on a shelf, mantelpiece, or inside a glass cabinet as a point of curiosity.

Keep wooden treen away from direct heat sources and drastic humidity changes to prevent splitting, and feed the wood occasionally with microcrystalline wax to maintain its condition.
