Description

This rare and finely carved pair of 19th Century limewood wall mounted occasional tables once belonged to a client’s grandmother. They are supported by twin tailed mermaids, which are also known as Melusine or the Sirena and can symbolise a traveller between two worlds. The owner wished to sell them as they did not have the space to display them properly. Even though they have minor losses and a few old repairs, the decision to purchase them was an easy one to make, as they are so attractive and exquisitely carved. The wall brackets probably originate from the Black Forest region, or possibly Austria or Central Italy. All these areas have historic associations with fine lime (linden wood) carving. These highly decorative walls mounted carved figures are robust enough to still be used as originally intended. As you can see both mermaids hold up a small circular table (detachable) that can be used to support and display, amongst other things, a decorative candlestick or a trailing plant. They are being sold as seen, however, we can quote for and undertake a certain amount of restoration if directed. Two wall fixing are supplied with the brackets which snugly slot into their original supports.

Figural wall brackets and corbels have been used since the Renaissance and Baroque periods to support architectural elements, lighting, or display surfaces while adding dramatic sculptural ornamentation to interior walls.

Master artisans traditionally utilised close-grained hardwoods and softwoods such as lime wood, boxwood, and oak, employing hand-carving chisels and gouges to achieve high relief and intricate detail.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, uniform patination accumulated over centuries, and construction methods consistent with historic joinery rather than modern moulding.

These pieces can be mounted at eye level to display small objets dart, placed flanking a fireplace, or utilized independently as sculptural wall art to introduce texture and historic character to minimalist spaces.

Maintenance requires dusting gently with a soft, dry brush and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the timber, avoiding liquid cleaners, silicone polishes, and direct sunlight.
