Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Book slides, or expanding book racks, became popular during the Victorian era as a practical desktop accessory to hold and display a growing collection of personal literature. They allowed users to adjust the length of the rack dynamically as books were added or removed.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often featuring decorative mounts made from brass, copper, or porcelain. The expanding mechanism generally utilised a scissor action or sliding wooden tracks underneath.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century usually display hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional brass fastenings with patination, and timber with natural grain patterns rather than modern synthetic finishes. Maker marks or registry stamps are occasionally found on the underside.

An antique book slide serves as a functional decorative element on an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to organise a curated selection of hardcover volumes. It introduces texture, historical character, and academic charm to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the wood from drying out or warping.
