The Empire style emerged in France during the early 19th century under Napoleon I, drawing heavily from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs to project imperial power and grandeur.

These pieces typically combine forged or polished steel bodies with fire-gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts, often assembled using threaded rods and secured nuts concealed within the structure.

Authentic pieces feature fire gilding with a characteristic soft, satin-matt gold finish, hand-chased metal details, and hand-cut joinery or screws appropriate to the period, unlike modern electroplated reproductions.

Position them symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to create a strong focal point that introduces classic architectural geometry and metallic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid all chemical cleaning agents or abrasive polishes, which can permanently strip the delicate fire-gilded layer or cause oxidation on the steel.
