FAQs

Georgian furniture, spanning the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber. The period drew heavy inspiration from Palladian architecture and later neoclassical motifs introduced by designers such as Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite.

Master cabinetmakers of the Georgian era predominantly utilised solid mahogany imported from the West Indies, often complemented by fine veneers and secondary softwoods like oak or pine for internal framing. Construction techniques featured precise mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, and turned pedestals supported by quadruple or tripod reeded or sabre legs terminating in brass castors.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber for deep patina, age-related shrinkage cracks, and hand-tool marks such as pit-sawing on hidden secondary woods. Genuine period pieces will exhibit traditional joinery without modern metal screws, and original brass hardware will show signs of natural oxidisation and wear consistent with centuries of use.

Antique console tables anchor a modern scheme by providing a rich textural contrast against minimalist plaster walls or neutral colour palettes. They function effectively in entrance hallways when styled with a symmetrical arrangement of modern ceramic lamps, or in living rooms beneath contemporary abstract art to ground the space.

Maintenance requires keeping mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and treated periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the grain and protect the historical finish.
