This large nineteenth-century Regency wall plaque is a carved wooden heraldic panel depicting the Prince of Wales's feathers. The object uses wood, gesso, paint, and gold leaf, finished in dark brown, gold, and crimson polychrome decoration. Visible details include an oval shape with a rope-twist border, a carved crown with fleur-de-lys, scrollwork banner decoration, and carved ostrich feathers. Inscribed lettering reads "ICH 1820 DIEN" across the red scroll banner. The panel measures 76 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece is designed for placement above the mantel as a statement wall hanging. It mounts securely to a wall in a living room, hallway, or study as a prominent decorative architectural element. The traditional heraldic design and historical date suit period properties, country houses, and classic interior schemes.

FAQs

A heraldic panel is a carved or painted wooden shield, plaque, or insignia displaying armorial bearings, crests, or royal devices, traditionally created for public buildings, estates, or ceremonial uses during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Nineteenth-century heraldic crests were primarily hand-carved from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, then finished with gesso, oil-based paint pigments, and gold leaf gilding to highlight relief details.

Authentic period pieces display hand-tool marks on the reverse, original gesso layers beneath paint wear, natural wood shrinkage around carved details, and subtle oxidisation on gilded elements.

Position the panel as a focal point above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a hallway setting, pairing the historical timber with neutral wall tones and tailored upholstery.

Dust the carved surfaces gently using a soft dry brush, keep the item in a stable climate away from direct heat sources, and avoid liquid chemicals that could dissolve historical paint or gilding.
