Beautiful Victorian paper-Mache lacquered tray with hand painted floral design with mother of pearl inlay. Like all antiques there are some imperfections (shown in pictures) however these are mostly to the back so unseen. It has a very simple design however still a very decorative item.

A Victorian papier-mache tray is a decorative serving or display object made from pressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets, treated with dark lacquers and often decorated with gilt detailing, hand painting, or mother-of-pearl inlays.

Pieces were created by pasting multiple layers of paper over shaped moulds or pressing paper pulp under high pressure, followed by baking, saturating in linseed oil, and applying multiple coats of dark asphaltum varnish prior to hand decoration.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate fine craquelure in the lacquer finish, precise hand-painted or mother-of-pearl detailing, and occasionally maker stamps from renowned 19th-century manufacturers such as Jennens & Bettridge.
