This George III side table dates from the eighteenth century. It takes the form of an oblong drop-leaf table in rich brown mahogany with a gateleg action and eight slender turned legs joined by ring-turned stretchers. The timber displays a warm reddish grain pattern across the vertical drop-leaf flap, while the lower frame rests on simple turned feet. Measuring 71 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 89 cm deep, the piece functions practically as a narrow console or display surface against a wall or at the end of a sofa in a living room, hallway, or study. When the leaves are raised, the surface area expands to accommodate lamps, books, or decorative objects, making it versatile for compact spaces while maintaining an airy profile characteristic of English country house furniture.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste once or twice a year, avoiding synthetic sprays and direct sunlight.

Place the table folded against a wall as a compact console, or position it alongside a sofa as a side table that can be expanded when additional surface area is required.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass drop-leaf hinges, subtle irregularities in the hand-turned legs, and secondary woods such as oak or pine used for internal runner supports.

These tables were primarily crafted from high-grade dense mahogany imported from the West Indies, known for its fine grain and strength, which allowed cabinetmakers to turn extremely slender structural legs.

A spider-leg table is a lightweight variation of the drop-leaf or gateleg table introduced during the 18th century in Great Britain. It is defined by its exceptionally thin, turned legs and interlocking stretchers that support drop-down flaps.
