Georgian Octagonal Scarlet Papier Maché Tray

18th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

George III octagonal scarlet papier maché tray

With gilt chinoiserie decoration and borders in 'India Rose' design, the underside inscribed with instructions to the decorator '32 Crimson Edge, India Rose Bottom, CE'. The raised canted sides pierced to form a pair of carrying handles.

A tray of very good size and colour, trays with red ground are more unusual and decorative, the surface with craquelure patina. Likely made by Henry Clay of London when his new patent, taken out on 20 November 1772, for a ‘new Improved Paper-ware’. This involved pasting sheets of paper together and then oiling, varnishing and stove-hardening them. This process produced panels suitable for coaches, carriages, sedan chairs and furniture. It was claimed that the material could be ‘sawn, planed, dove-tailed or mitred in the same manner as if made in wood’.

English, circa 1800

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian papier-mache trays were produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, often featuring japanned surfaces, vibrant lacquer colours, and hand-painted or gilded floral borders.

These pieces were created by pressing paper sheets or pulp mixed with adhesive into shaped moulds, followed by heat-curing, lacquering, and applying decorative painted or gilded finishes.

Authentic period examples demonstrate age-appropriate fine craquelure across the lacquered finish, slight surface wear around edges, integrated cut-out handles, and a light yet solid structure.

Place the tray flat on a sideboard or coffee table to organize smaller accessories, or display it vertically on a plate stand inside a glass cabinet as decorative art.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre duster and avoid applying water or chemical solvent sprays, as moisture can penetrate cracks in the varnish and damage the paper core.
