Sunderland lustreware is a type of English pottery produced primarily in the North East of England during the nineteenth century, characterised by its distinctive metallic glaze effects.

These pieces are typically crafted from earthenware, featuring transfer-printed transfer motifs combined with a metallic pink or purple lustre glaze applied via a specialized chemical reduction process.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, hand-applied glaze characteristics, typical potting flaws, characteristic transfer prints featuring ships or masonic symbols, and overall age-related crazing.

These decorative objects work well displayed on a mantlepiece or within a glazed cabinet, adding historical texture and a touch of metallic sheen to traditional or eclectic spaces.

Keep items out of direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid submerging in water or using chemical cleaning agents to protect the delicate metallic glaze.
