FAQs

Originally introduced in the 17th century as a stand for carrying a torch or candle, the torchere evolved over time into an ornamental pedestal used to display sculpture, urns, and plants in formal interiors.

Victorian torcheres were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany or pine, often given an ebonised finish to imitate more expensive materials like ebony, and featured hand-turned shafts and carved capitals.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved detailing with natural tool marks, traditional finishes like shellac or ebonisation showing age-related wear, and dense, heavy native or imported timbers.

A pedestal can serve as a striking architectural element in a room, used to elevate potted plants, contemporary bronze sculptures, or art glass to create height variation and focal points.

Maintain ebonised wood by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading or cracking of the finish, and applying a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface.
