A term, or terminal figure, is a pillar or pilaster that tapers towards the base, usually surmounted by a carved bust, head, or upper torso of a human or mythological figure.

English oak was the predominant wood utilised during this era, valued for its durability, dense grain, and deep colour acquired over centuries of ageing.

Authentication involves examining tool marks for hand-chiselled execution, assessing timber shrinkage and oxidisation patterns, and verifying traditional joinery methods consistent with the period.

These sculptural elements can be mounted on metal stands or displayed directly on walls as focal art pieces, adding historic texture to minimalist or maximalist spaces.

Historic wood should be kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking, and treated occasionally with microcrystalline wax to nourish the fibres without sealing them.
