Description

Stunning Art Deco brass inlaid bronze and burr yew-wood desk ink stand by Erhard & Sohne of Germany. It is not stamped as far as I can see but definitely by the above maker. The quality and workmanship is amazing. Has its original white porcelain insert. No repairs or damage apart from a small chip to the porcelain insert. As good as any English Boulle style inkstand that I have seen.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Art Nouveau metalwork, prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is characterised by organic motifs, flowing lines, and stylised floral patterns often executed in brass, bronze, and plated metals.

These items typically combined cast brass or bronze elements with wooden bases, frequently featuring etched, engraved, or inlaid brass ornamentation known as brass-to-wood mounts.

Authentic pieces often bear stamped maker marks, typically a sunburst or monogram logo, and display high-precision casting quality combined with meticulous hand-chased detailing characteristic of German manufacturing from the era.

Such decorative objects serve as functional accent pieces on a study desk, bookshelf, or console table, adding metallic warmth and historical texture to contemporary or traditional spaces.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth. Chemical polishes should be avoided to protect the historic patina and any protective lacquers or original surface treatments.
