Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This early 18th-century Baroque console table belongs to the gentleman's library style and consists of carved walnut wood in a dark brown colour. The top has a rectangular wooden surface, while the deep frieze exhibits high-relief carving depicting central figures and flowers surrounded by scrolling acanthus foliage and putti figures. Four cabriole-style scrolled legs support the structure, terminating in carved feet and embellished with ornate carving along their lengths. The piece measures 79 cm high, 112 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Suitable for placement beside the front door or within a hallway, this table provides a surface for decorative items or everyday essentials. The dark polished timber grain shows natural variations in tone across the top and carved surfaces. The sturdy construction accommodates practical use in a home while maintaining its historical decorative appearance.

Baroque furniture, originating in Europe in the 17th century, is characterised by dramatic ornamentation, deep sculptural relief carving, dynamic curves, and motifs derived from nature, architecture, and classical mythology.

Tables from this period were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and beech. These timbers allowed craftsmen to execute deep, intricate hand-carving along the aprons, friezes, and legs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks, irregular chisel impressions within the carved recesses, peg joinery, and natural shrinkage or patination consistent with centuries of exposure to air and light.

Positioning an ornate wooden table against a neutral wall creates a focal point. Combining the structured wood carving with contemporary minimalist lighting or modern artwork provides architectural contrast within a space.

Maintain a stable relative humidity to prevent wood movement and cracking. Clean intricate carvings gently using a soft-bristled brush, and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.
