Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Baroque furniture, originating in Europe in the 17th century, is characterised by dramatic ornamentation, deep sculptural relief carving, dynamic curves, and motifs derived from nature, architecture, and classical mythology.

Tables from this period were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and beech. These timbers allowed craftsmen to execute deep, intricate hand-carving along the aprons, friezes, and legs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks, irregular chisel impressions within the carved recesses, peg joinery, and natural shrinkage or patination consistent with centuries of exposure to air and light.

Positioning an ornate wooden table against a neutral wall creates a focal point. Combining the structured wood carving with contemporary minimalist lighting or modern artwork provides architectural contrast within a space.

Maintain a stable relative humidity to prevent wood movement and cracking. Clean intricate carvings gently using a soft-bristled brush, and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.
