Early 19th Century Regency Games Table With Removable Chess And Backgammon Boards, Attributed To Gillows
£2,400 $3,251 €2,827
Fine quality games table in the form of a sofa table with reversible top panel which has a chess board inlaid on one side and opens to reveal a backgammon tray within. The chess board and backgammon tray can be removed to use elsewhere or used in situ. The backgammon tray is fitted with the most wonderfully detailed felt playing surface and it is in very good condition indeed.
Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London circa 1830.
There are two tables with similar top section in Susan Stuart''s book, one of which has the same ormolu caster feet, both made by P. Fearnley.
74cm high
101cm wide (open)
51cm deep
Provenance: Gatewick, Steyning, West Sussex
TF074
The table is from the collection of the Yorke Family from Gatewick House in West Sussex. The house was bought in 1953 by David Yorke who was the Grandson of the 7th Earl of Harwicke and his wife Anne Mackail who was great-great Granddaughter of Sir Edward Burne Jones. The house contained items inherited fr...om The Yorke and Burne-Jones families as well as some pieces bought for the house by David and Anne in the 1950s and 1960s. The condition of the table together with the provenance makes me think that it is unlikely that this table has been altered or ever needed any significant restoration in its life.
