This Regency games table is constructed from rich brown rosewood displaying a fine, dense timber grain. The rectangular fold-over top presents a quadrant beaded edge, above a frieze flanked by carved scrolled brackets. A plain tapering central pedestal supports the structure, accented at the base with a chased brass collar. The pedestal rests upon a four-legged outswept platform, with knees decorated in carved acanthus motifs, terminating in original brass castors. In practical terms, the table stands 75 cm high with a 91 cm by 91 cm top when unfolded, providing a functional surface for card games. Placed beside the front door or in a living room, the piece functions effectively as a console table or an occasional surface for display, bringing period character to a hallway or reception space.

Popularised during the early nineteenth century in Britain, card tables were designed for social gatherings and parlor games. Constructed with fold-over tops and swivel mechanisms, they served as decorative console tables against walls when closed and transformed into green-baize surfaces when opened for card play.

Cabinetmakers of the Regency period primarily utilised fine exotic hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often applying cut veneers to display distinct grain patterns. Decorative details typically featured brass collars, carved scroll brackets, and cast brass feet or lion paw castors.

Authentic pieces demonstrate early nineteenth-century cabinetmaking techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints on internal compartments, original brass castors, and period-correct swivel hardware. The timber exhibits deep figure and natural age-related patina, often accompanied by concealed storage wells beneath the swivel top.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer fading. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood surface, and clear dust using a soft dry cloth.

When kept closed, the table operates as a console table in an entrance hallway, behind a sofa, or within a formal living area. Positioning decorative ceramics, lamps, or framed artwork on top incorporates historical craftsmanship into modern decorative schemes.
