FAQs

Black Forest woodcarvings originated in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the 19th century, developing from a traditional winter craft into a celebrated commercial art form that often featured realistic depictions of local wildlife, particularly bears.

Authentic pieces are typically hand-carved from single blocks of local timber, such as lime or walnut, utilizing specialized chisels and gouges to create intricate textures representing fur, with glass eyes frequently inserted for realism.

Authenticity is determined by examining the tool marks for hand-carved precision, checking for the use of period-appropriate materials like mouth-blown glass eyes, and assessing the natural patina and age-related timber shrinkage.

This piece can be styled as a focal point on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk, adding organic texture, warmth, and character to contemporary or traditional spaces alike.

Preserve the timber by keeping the piece out of direct sunlight and away from rapid humidity fluctuations, periodically dusting with a soft, dry brush and avoiding liquid polishes or aggressive cleaning agents.
