Early 20th Century English Folk Art Scratch-built Ship Model

1900 - 1920
Description

Early 20th Century English folk art scratch-built ship model of S.V Liverpool

One of the best examples we have uncovered, an early 20th Century example of an English folk art scratch-built ship model. The S.V Liverpool was the fastest steel sailing ship of its time in the early 20th Century. This scene depicts it being wrecked in 1902 of Alderney (Guernsey). This example is made of exceptional high-quality craftsmanship, from the metal sails, carved wooden detail of the hull with small boats, cabins and stairs, sealike cotton detail, lighthouse sat on actual rocks and canvas painted backdrop. Encased in its original hand-crafted pine case box and amazingly its 19th Century hand crafted wobbly glass front. The worn painted surface of the outer case is beautiful and has aged perfectly. A very decorative piece of English nautical folk art in our humble opinion and would make an amazing centre piece in any stylish setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A maritime ship diorama is a three-dimensional folk art construction, typically housed within a glazed box or frame, featuring a hand-built model vessel set against a painted sea and sky background.

Craftspeople used pine or salvaged wood for the casing and hull, shaped canvas or stiffened paper for sails, thread or wire for rigging, and lead-based oil paints to depict water and sky.

Authentic pieces feature handcrafted details rather than mass-produced parts, natural wood shrinkage or craquelure on painted surfaces, hand-cut nails or joinery, and aged patina on the rigging and framing.

Place the box on a mantelpiece, open shelf, or console table alongside natural materials like stone and linen to complement its textured, architectural quality.

Keep the display in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, and clean the glass casing gently with a dry microfibre cloth without introducing moisture inside the box.
