This Renaissance Revival door knocker dates from circa 1900 and takes the form of a heavy cast metal piece with a polished gold finish. The design incorporates a classical head crest serving as the top hinge, a large ring knocker embellished with folial detailing, and a lower mascaron relief featuring a bearded face. The bright metallic surface catches the light across the sculpted facial features and decorative scrollwork. Measuring 16.5 cm high by 13 cm wide with a 4 cm projection, the hardware mounts directly onto an exterior or interior door. It functions as a tactile entrance accent in a hallway, porch or study, bringing traditional decorative ironmongery into a contemporary residential interior.

Figural door knockers became prominent during the Renaissance and Victorian periods, often incorporating classical grotesque heads, mythological figures, or lions to symbolise protection and prestige at the entrance of a property.

Historically, door knockers were cast in solid brass, bronze, or wrought iron due to their durability, weather resistance, and ability to hold fine relief detail during the casting process.

Authentic period pieces often feature casting seam marks on the reverse, heavy weight due to solid metal construction, and natural wear or patination in unpolished crevices around fixings and hinges.

A polished bronze or brass knocker creates a striking contrast when mounted on painted timber front doors in neutral tones such as dark navy, off-white, or forest green.

Polished bronze should be wiped down regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust and moisture, and occasional application of specialized metal polish or microcrystalline wax helps protect against tarnish and oxidisation.
