This large nineteenth-century Italian majolica charger follows the Renaissance Revival style of Urbino. Hand-decorated earthenware displays a glossy polychrome tin glaze in cobalt blue, yellow, and orange, offset by green and white tones across a circular surface measuring 58.5 cm in diameter. The central narrative scene depicts a gathering of putti in a landscape alongside script, horns, and trumpets. This central medallion is encircled by elaborate grotesque border scrollwork, classical mythical winged beasts, floral elements, and four mascaron face medallions. Minor edge wear marks the glaze. Positioned horizontally above a sideboard or table, the charger functions as a decorative wall or surface display piece within a maximalist interior scheme. The bold iconography and bright palette introduce historical narrative art to living spaces, dining areas, or studies, bringing nineteenth-century Italian ceramics into contemporary homes.

19th-century Renaissance Revival majolica, or maiolica, revived the techniques and motifs of 16th-century Italian pottery. These pieces feature tin-glazed earthenware decorated with classical themes, istoriato narrative scenes, putti, and grotesque border scrollwork.

Majolica is crafted from earthenware clay coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Metal oxide pigments, including cobalt blue, copper green, and antimony yellow, are applied directly onto the unfired glaze before undergoing a firing process.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork with visible variation, stilt marks on the reverse from kiln firing, and natural crazing within the tin glaze. Maker marks or numerals incised or painted under the glaze can also assist attribution.

A large ceramic charger can be displayed on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mounted securely to create a focal point on a gallery wall. Combining historic ceramics with contemporary joinery provides textural contrast.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to clean the surface. Avoid immersing tin-glazed earthenware in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture can penetrate existing crazing and damage the body.
