Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. These 19th-century Italian Baroque Revival wall sculptures depict a pair of hand-made cherub figures shaped in wood composition and gesso with a polychrome paint finish. Both putti show a dynamic pose with cream-toned bodies, brown hair, carved wings, and vivid green drapery wrapped around their middles. The figures include twin hooks in the back for hanging and display the signature letter A marked on a foot. Each sculpture measures 51 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. They work well mounted on a wall above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway to bring classical detail to a domestic interior. The antique decorative pieces provide character and movement to flat wall surfaces through their sculptural form and traditional coloration.

FAQs

Putti are sculpted or painted representations of chubby, winged infants rooted in classical imagery and revived during the Italian Renaissance. In 19th-century Italian art, they were frequently created as wall-mounted decorative accents, architectural fragments, or components of larger ecclesiastical displays.

Traditional construction involved hand-carving native softwoods such as linden or pine, which were then coated in a gesso preparation layer. Polychrome paint and leaf gilding were subsequently applied to create skin tones, vivid drapery colours, and accented wings.

Authentic period examples display hand-carving tool marks, layered gesso undercoats beneath painted surfaces, and age-appropriate paint craquelure. Structural mounting marks or artisan signatures on the reverse also help distinguish 19th-century figures from modern cast reproductions.

These figurative sculptures are often positioned flanking a central mirror, art piece, or archway to establish visual symmetry. They also serve as focal wall accents within contemporary gallery arrangements or entryways to contrast modern linear furnishings.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking fragile paint or gesso layers. Keep the carvings in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, dampness, and liquid cleaning solvents.
