An obelisk thermometer is a decorative weather instrument carved into the shape of an Egyptian-style obelisk, popular during the 19th century Grand Tour period when souvenirs influenced European interior design.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense stones such as black marble, slate, or onyx, often featuring micro-mosaic, malachite, or mother-of-pearl inlay work alongside glass tube mercury mechanisms.

Authenticity is determined by hand-carved stone construction, period-appropriate typography on the scale plate, hand-blown glass tubing, and natural ageing or wear consistent with nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

This piece works well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk, adding architectural height and historical texture to contemporary or traditional spaces.

Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to avoid scratching the stone or damaging the delicate inlay, and keep away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the glass mechanism.
