Georgian games boxes were crafted during the 18th and early 19th centuries to house parquetry, cards, and bone counters used in fashionable parlour pastimes such as piquet, bezique, and whist.

These boxes were typically constructed from native and exotic timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or pine, often featuring inlaid banding, hand-painted lid medallions, and segmented paper-lined interiors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate aged patina, hand-pressed bone or mother-of-pearl counters, and traditional typography on internal paper ephemera rather than modern machinery marks.

An antique games box makes a tactile display object on a coffee table or sideboard, introducing historical texture, warm wood tones, and conversational charm to contemporary living spaces.

Preserve wooden gaming boxes by keeping them out of direct sunlight and away from central heating vents, applying periodic applications of microcrystalline wax to protect the historic timber and finish.
