Antique Chinese Blue and White Bowl

Description

An antique Chinese bowl dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, with attractive naive decoration in underglaze blue with stylised flowers and scrolls.

Condition: The bowl has various flaws as follows, but they don’t detract from its charm:

There are several chips to the rim and two hairline cracks radiating from the rim towards the centre of the bowl. There is an area of loss to the glaze in the centre of the bowl and various pits and blemishes. There is an area of loss to the glaze on the underside of the bowl and some firing flaws around the foot.

Blue and white porcelain gained widespread prominent production during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Cobalt oxide pigment was painted onto unfired porcelain vessels before receiving a clear glaze and being fired at high temperatures.

These pieces were crafted from natural kaolin clay mixed with petuntse, producing a dense white ceramic body. Decorative patterns were applied using cobalt oxide pigment as an underglaze layer beneath a clear protective glaze.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor variations in glaze thickness, evidence of hand-tooling on the unglazed foot ring, and variable cobalt saturation under the glaze. Natural age wear along rims, firing flaws, and slight iron spots are common indicators.
