Description

A mid 19th century enfield 3 band percussion musket dated 1858, ist essex volunteers. Barrel stamped with a broad arrow and various inspectors marks, hinged ladder rear sight, the lockplate stamped with a crown and vr and dated 1858, the walnut full stock with brass fore end tip, trigger guard and butt plate, the tang engraved 1st.ex.v3, with 3 steel barrel bands, single steel swivel, the right side of butt with broad arrow and sold out of service arrows. Ramrod missing but can be replaced fairly easily.

Introduced in the mid-nineteenth century, the Enfield percussion rifle replaced earlier smoothbore muskets in British service. Its rifled barrel allowed for far greater accuracy and effective range, making it a pivotal military longarm during the Victorian era.

These rifles were primarily constructed with a solid walnut wood stock, forged iron or steel barrels, and brass or iron fitments such as trigger guards, buttplates, and nose caps.

Authentic pieces feature specific lockplate markings, such as a crown motif and manufacturing date, alongside Ordnance proof marks stamped along the barrel and regimental unit markings on the stock or brass buttplate.
