A magnificent antique French gilt wood marble top console table. This was made in France & I would date it from around the 1900-1920 period.

It is of outstanding quality and is extremely impressive. It is a great size, the gilt wood frame has beautiful carving and a lovely patina. The marble top has absolutely stunning colours and patterns.

The condition is excellent for its age, with only some minor age related surface wear here and there.

French antique console tables from periods such as Louis XV or Louis XVI are characterised by ornate carvings, symmetrical or serpentine lines, and luxurious finishes like gold leaf or gesso.

These tables are typically constructed using a carved timber base, such as oak or pine, finished with applied gesso and gold leaf or gilt paint, topped with a slab of polished natural marble.

Authenticity is identified through hand-carved details, traditional joinery methods, natural ageing of the gilt finish, and the presence of heavy, period-appropriate marble slabs rather than synthetic substitutes.

A traditional console table can be contrasted in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist decor, such as a simple abstract mirror, modern ceramics, or keeping the surface clean to highlight the craftsmanship.

Giltwood should be dusted gently with a dry, soft brush to avoid damaging the delicate gold leaf, while marble surfaces require pH-neutral cleaners and immediate wiping of spills to prevent staining.
