Victorian glass domes, often referred to as display cloches, became popular during the mid-19th century as a means to protect delicate decorative objects, taxidermy, and handmade floral arrangements from dust and damage in coal-heated Victorian homes.

These decorative pieces typically consist of a blown glass dome, a turned wooden base made from ebonised wood, mahogany, or walnut, and interior arrangements crafted from materials such as wool, wire, wax, or preserved botanical elements.

Authentic period pieces often feature mouth-blown glass with minor surface imperfections, small pontil marks on the glass, aged wooden bases with natural patina, and hand-stitched or hand-formed interior components characteristic of 19th-century craftsmanship.

Such decorative objects work effectively as focal points on mantels, sideboards, or bookshelves, adding texture and historical interest to transitional or maximalist interior schemes.

To preserve the item, keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the interior elements, clean the glass gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid lifting the dome by its top if applicable to prevent accidental dropping.
