Description

A Fine Regency Period Circular Rosewood Veneered Breakfast or Centre Table.

The well-figured rosewood top with a particularly wide band of crossbanding to the edge and two graduated beaded side mouldings. The top is supported on a single central column with a wide variety of turned details, creating a very interesting decorative effect. The table has a platform base and four legs as seen on most tables of this type but the style of the platform is very unusual in that it is circular to match the top. It has the additional refinement of panelled sections with particularly finely chosen veneers displayed within and the legs have a very distinctive shape to them and turned paterae at the knees. The piece retains the original brass castors with leaf moulded detail which have acquired a beautifully aged colour and patina. The table top can be tilted so the piece can be displayed against a wall when not in use.

A very fine example.

Date of Manufacture

Lee Wright Antiques & Interiors Ltd has dated this Regency Rosewood Centre Table to the 19th Century.

Regency style furniture emerged in Britain during the early 19th century, characterised by a revival of classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, often incorporating dark exotic woods like rosewood with brass inlay.

Master craftsmen utilised dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often featuring finely figured veneers over sound secondary timbers, supported by robust pedestal bases and brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-cut screws, genuine timber shrinkage, and patination consistent with age, alongside classical architectural proportions typical of the early 1800s.

An antique centre table functions as a striking focal point in a large hallway or living space, paired with modern minimalist seating to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and contemporary design.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
