John Speed County Map Stafford Counties and Towne Double Sided

Description

An original 1611 copper engraving with old hand colouring. There are 2 town plans, of Lichfield, top right, with key below and a town plan of Stafford top left .

Beneath this there is a description of a bloody battle fought upon Blore heath .

..... "of common soldiers therr dyed 2,400...."

It is a 2 sided map and on the back English text describes the history and geography of Staffordshire.

The map is I. A simple wooden frame and glazed front and back

Created by cartographer John Speed for his atlas published from 1611 onwards, these maps feature detailed county topography, heraldic coats of arms, strapwork ornamentation, and inset town plans.

These maps were printed from copperplate engravings onto handmade rag paper and were frequently finished with hand-applied watercolour washes to highlight boundaries and heraldry.

Genuine originals exhibit a clear plate mark impression from the copper engraving plate, vertical centre folds from atlas binding, age-appropriate rag paper texture, and often printed text on the reverse side.

Position framed maps within a home office, hallway gallery wall, or library setting to add historic character and visual texture alongside timber furniture.

Mount the map using acid-free archival materials under UV-filtering glass, avoiding direct sunlight and humid environments to prevent foxing and colour fading.
