The Staunton chess pattern was registered in 1849 by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by the leading chess master of the era, Howard Staunton. It quickly became the standard design for tournament play due to its universally recognisable and balanced piece forms.

Traditional high-grade Staunton sets are typically crafted from boxwood for the lighter pieces, while the darker pieces are made from heavier woods such as ebony, or boxwood stained to imitate ebony. Bases are frequently weighted with lead and lined with baize or felt to ensure stability during play.

Authentication involves examining the hand-turned details of the pieces, particularly the knights carving style, the shape of the kings cross, and the patina of the wood. Lead weighting in the base, felt or green baize undersides, and construction wear consistent with age also help determine period accuracy.

An antique chess set can be displayed set up on a dedicated table, sideboard, or desk as a focal point that adds intellectual depth and tactile texture to a room. Pairing the wooden tones with complementary natural materials enhances traditional or study-themed decor schemes.

Antique wooden chess pieces should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent the wood from cracking or warping. Cleaning should be done strictly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or excessive moisture.
