This early 19th-century Georgian Scottish dining table follows the Regency style associated with Duncan Phyfe. Made from mahogany with a rich reddish-brown finish, the piece features a rectangular drop-leaf surface with rounded corners, supported by a central pedestal and four reeded, splayed legs. The feet end in original brass toe castors, and the base includes moulded swept legs with turned patera decoration. A drawer is fitted to one side with an original working lock, key, and a hanging tassel pull, while a dummy drawer sits on the reverse. The timber displays a polished sheen across the top surfaces. Measuring 74 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 104 cm deep when open, the table provides flexible surface space through its hinged leaves. In a modern interior, it functions well as a compact dining table in a kitchen or dining room, or as a central display surface in a study or hallway where a drop-leaf configuration permits space-saving adjustments.

FAQs

The Duncan Phyfe style, popularised in the early 19th century, is characterised by Neoclassical lines, reeded splayed legs, pedestal bases, and functional features like drop-leaves or extension mechanisms.

These tables were predominantly crafted from high-grade solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, complemented by solid brass toe caps and castors, and iron hinge mechanisms for the drop leaves.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved reeding on splayed legs, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, genuine aged brass hardware with socket castors, and period-appropriate timber shrinkage.

Position the table as a space-saving centrepiece in a dining space, pairing its rich mahogany tones with modern upholstered chairs or minimal neutral decor to balance traditional and modern elements.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and protect the surface from direct heat, liquid spills, and direct sunlight.
