FAQs

Georgian tea tables emerged during the 18th century as the consumption of tea became a prominent social ritual among the affluent classes, necessitating specialised furniture to hold porcelain service.

Master cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense imported timber such as mahogany, frequently incorporating secondary woods like pine or oak for interior framing and drawer linings.

Authenticity is assessed through hand-cut joinery such as dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, patination consistent with age, and period-appropriate tool marks on concealed surfaces.

Pairing a dark wood antique table with modern minimalist seating or abstract artwork creates a balanced tension between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Maintain stable relative humidity levels, keep the timber away from direct heat sources, and apply periodic treatments of microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain without sealing the surface.
