.

DIMENSIONS:

Height – 71cm / Width – 92cm / Depth – 42cm / Extended - 116.5cm

.

CONDITION REPORT:

In rustic antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, scratches, shrinkage, splits, stains and fading to the top (pictured), further marks, scratches and minor losses to the legs (pictured). There is extreme evidence of historic woodworm to the base and underneath, however this is now long gone and has been fully treated as a precaution. The antique oak gateleg table still remains structurally solid and sound. Overall, a rather pleasing example, full of rustic charm.

Gateleg tables gained widespread popularity in seventeenth-century Britain during the Stuart and Jacobean periods, engineered to provide a large surface area that could be folded down and tucked away when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints, hinged drop leaves, and pivoting leg gates that swing out to support the extended leaves.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut joints, traditional wood shrinkage, period-appropriate tool marks, historical patina, and wear patterns consistent with centuries of use.

Pair the dark wood tones with contemporary minimalist chairs and modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean, modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic finish.
