Sold 12 May 2025 · Opus Antiques
This “Antique Charles II Spice Mortar Grinder” found a buyer.

It was listed by Opus Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An early piece of treen, dating from around 1680, Charles II, a spice mortar grinder

The handle section still has its original metal plate as does the inside section, to grind spices and herbs. The base comes apart to retrieve the ground ingredients. Incised line decoration. At some stage in its 350 year life it has had some wood worm, long gone, not active and all treated. The rim of the main section has a section that has been filled at the edge a long time ago, presumably to ensure the handle/lid sits straight.

Overall for its age its doing well, a rare survivor, not a great deal deal of treen survives from this period.

It has a great  nutty colour and patina.

c1680

It measures 25cm h x 9cm w at the base.

A very similar one is illustrated in Treen for the Table.

Date of Manufacture

Opus Antiques has dated this Antique Wooden Spice Grinder to the 17th Century.

The Charles II period, spanning the late 17th century, is characterised by functional yet increasingly ornate turned woodwork, often utilising dense native timbers like fruitwood or oak with rich patination.

These items were typically turned on a pole lathe from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, sycamore, or fruitwood, featuring mortise and tenon or threaded joints crafted entirely by hand.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, shrinkage cracks, wormholes consistent with age, and a deep, oxidised surface patina known as treen skin developed through centuries of handling.

Place the piece on an open kitchen shelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard to introduce organic texture, historic warmth, and sculptural contrast to contemporary minimalist spaces.

Maintain antique treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, occasionally treating the surface with microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood.
