This late 18th-century Georgian tea table is fashioned from mahogany with a warm brown finish. The serpentine top has crossbanded calamander alongside boxwood and ebony line inlay, complemented by an astragal moulded decoration to the top of the five square tapered legs, where one leg swings round to hold the top open. A single small apron drawer sits at the front, fitted with original metal handles and an oak lining. The table measures 72 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. Placed in a hallway or against a narrow wall space in an English country house interior, this versatile piece functions as a side table or console surface. It adapts easily for display items or occasional hospitality use, bringing period character and practical surface space to living areas, reception rooms, or landings without dominating the room.

Popularised in 18th-century Britain, a Georgian serpentine tea table features a double-curved front rimmed with decorative crossbanding and a fold-over top designed for entertaining.

These tables typically showcase solid mahogany and wood veneers, often accented with boxwood or satinwood stringing, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and gate-leg support mechanisms.

Authentic Georgian examples exhibit hand-planed unpolished undersides, original iron or brass hinges, hand-cut joinery, and natural oxidisation on unvarnished drawer interiors.

Position the folded table against a corridor wall or behind a sofa as a console, topped with modern table lamps or ceramic vessels to contrast traditional joinery with contemporary decor.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry cloth, applying natural beeswax twice annually, and placing the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators.
